A Helpful Guide to Buying Fabric Chairs for Your Home.

Chairs come in a wide range of colours, sizes, materials, and styles. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of options. Fabric chairs are the most popular ones because the material is versatile, easy-care and fairly inexpensive. However, whether looking for a chair for your dining room, living room or bedroom there is a number of aspects to consider before buying the right one.

What Kind of Fabric is Best for a Chair?

Fabric chairs might seem pretty straight-forward in terms of materials used. However, we often seem to overlook the different types of fabrics and their advantages. We should never put them into one basket thinking they are all the same, their look and feel can be quite different from one another.

  • Polyester upholstered chairs. Polyester is the most commonly used fabric when it comes to upholstered chairs. The fabric is fairly strong, hard-wearing and easy-care. It is made of synthetic fibres thanks to which it is resistant to shrinking and stretching. It is also easily dyed thanks to which it retains its colour for a long time.
  • Polyester linen upholstered chairs. Polyester linen is usually a blend of polyester and linen. It has much thicker threads than polyester fabric and breaths more easily. Strong and durable, it may appear a little coarse to touch. Easy to clean, it gives the furniture a more rustic feel.
  • Velvet upholstered chairs. Polyester velvet combines the luxurious feel of natural velvet with strength and durability of polyester. It is soft to touch thanks to its thin threads that create a feather-like fabric. Characterised by a lovely sheen effect, it brings out the shimmer and tonal variations in colour.

Choosing the Right Chair Type for the Right Purpose

Every chair has its purpose, whether for dining, providing a comfortable seat to read or accentuating the home décor. Each type has its distinctive features that that help to differentiate one from the other.

  • Dining Chairs are usually straight-forward in terms of design. Slim yet comfortable, their purpose, as the name suggests, is to provide you with a seat by the dining table. Usually armless to take minimal space, their upholstery covers a moderate amount of filling. Their traditional 4-legged base is sometimes replaced by the C-shaped one like in the case of cantilever dining chairs.
  • Accent Chairs are much broader and stockier. Usually resembling armchairs, they are generously filled for the utmost comfort. They come in a wide range of design styles and colours as they are to complement the décor style and be a stand-alone embellishment of any room. Unlike armchairs, their base is much lighter, most commonly made from wood or metal.

Buy the Chair that Meets All Your Needs

When choosing a chair remember to think about the materials and the purpose. If you are looking for a classic dining chair, polyester is the best way to go. When buying a luxurious accent chair with a lovely sheen choose a luxurious plush one upholstered in velvet. Polyester linen works perfectly in both cases granting a more rustic look.
